Outcome 5

Writing and Power.

“Students will be able to critically examine and act on the relationship among identity, literacy, language, and power.”

Evidence #1

For this assignment, I wrote a Literacy Snapshot, which is a personal narrative exploring my experiences with language and how they shaped my identity. The task asked me to reflect on a moment when reading, writing, speaking, or being silent influenced how I see myself, and to consider the role of language in culture, community, and power. I chose to focus on my transition from Argentina to the United States and how learning English affected my sense of belonging, especially in the context of playing soccer. The goal was to write in a way that felt authentic and personal while showing insight into how language connects to identity.

In completing this assignment, I met Outcome 5 by demonstrating awareness of how language and literacy relate to identity, culture, and power. Through my narrative, I showed how learning English shaped my confidence and sense of belonging, and I reflected on the challenges and growth I experienced. I used my voice intentionally, including code-switching and descriptive details, to convey meaning effectively for my audience. I also reflected on my writing choices, showing careful consideration of tone, structure, and language, which highlights my ability to understand and apply language in rhetorically appropriate ways.
